Just one question: If one question works, why ask several?
نویسنده
چکیده
A frequently asked question by clinical investigators is why they should use a lengthy, multi-item measurement scale to assess patients’ perceptions of their health, or quality of life, when there is evidence that a measure containing a single, global question is likely to suffice. Researchers may not wish to use lengthy scales because their core questionnaires are already long, the patient group of interest is ill or frail, they wish to minimise the burden on the patient and on the research team, or they simply want a ‘‘snap shot’’ of a topic rather than comprehensive coverage. In such circumstances, single questions have the obvious advantage of brevity, of making fewer demands than multiitem measures on respondents and researchers. Single, global questions have long been used in population surveys to measure health status, quality of life (QoL), and health related quality of life (HRQoL). The two most popular single global health items are self rated health status and self reported limiting, longstanding illness.

متن کاملIs Just War Theory Obsolete?
Just War Theory can be found in almost all major cultures. But since war was a business that could not be easily stopped, some aimed to constrain it. In its classic form, Just War Theory has been around for several centuries—ever since nationhood in Europe replaced provincial governments. Having made some introductory considerations, I will ask: should Just War Theory be left as it is, changed,...
متن کاملWe Are Rescued Us from Asexual Clonality by Parasites and Muller’s Ratchet
The question of ‘why have sex?’ is amazingly one of the last unsolved problems of evolutionary biology (Maynard Smith 1982). Sex is so basic to life that it seems curious to question its existence. Most species of animals are dioecious, which literally translates into ‘live in two houses’ -namely male and female. Many male and female behaviors revolve around the act of sex so it seems appropria...
متن کاملHomeostasis of Eye Growth and the Question of Myopia
As with other organs, the eye's growth is regulated by homeostatic control mechanisms. Unlike other organs, the eye relies on vision as a principal input to guide growth. In this review, we consider several implications of this visual guidance. First, we compare the regulation of eye growth to that of other organs. Second, we ask how the visual system derives signals that distinguish the blur o...
متن کاملPhilosophical Rationalism in Shia Kalam
One important question that the emergence of philosophical or rational Kalam has raised is what rationalism in the so-called Kalami (theological) schools actually means. Also, we have a comparative look at the philosophical Kalam and the rational one, concluding the identity of Shi’a Kalam with Shi’a philosophy. ...
